What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia/Dissociative Disorder
Schizophrenia is commonly known as a long term mental disorder which involves a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior.
These effects often lead to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation. Schizophrenia may not be as common as many of the other mental diseases, but the symptoms are very disabling. https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/schizophrenia/index.shtml |
History
The word "schizophrenia" is less than 100 years old. The disease was first identified as a discrete mental illness by Dr. Emile Kraepelin in 1887. He used the term "dementia praecox" for individuals who had symptoms that we now associate with schizophrenia.
There are many written documents about schizophrenia that can be traced back to the old Pharaonic Egypt. Some disorders that are typically in schizophrenia include depression, dementia, as well ass thought disturbances.
